The Three Questions Every Client Brief Is Actually Asking
A brief that says “we need something more modern” rarely means the client has studied typography trends. It usually means one of three underlying things: they’re worried about looking outdated to a specific competitor, they’ve had negative feedback they haven’t fully processed, or the business itself has changed and the old identity no longer fits.
Reading past the literal request is one of the fastest ways to shortcut a project. Asking “modern compared to what, exactly?” or “what made you feel that way?” almost always surfaces the real brief hiding underneath the stated one — and it’s usually more specific and more useful than what was written down.
The three questions worth asking before any design work starts: what changed recently that made this project necessary, who specifically needs to approve the outcome, and what would make this a failure in their eyes even if you think it looks great.
