Your Portfolio Homepage Has Three Seconds, Not Thirty
Watching someone actually use a portfolio site for the first time is humbling. Most visitors decide whether to keep scrolling within a few seconds, based almost entirely on the first screen — not the thoughtful about page three scrolls down, and not the case study buried on page two of the work section.
That first screen needs to answer two questions immediately: what kind of work is this person good at, and is there evidence right here that they’re good at it. A clever headline with no visual proof above the fold loses visitors who were never going to scroll far enough to find the proof.
The fix is usually structural, not stylistic — lead with your strongest single piece of work, large, above the fold, with a one-line caption. Save the artistic homepage animation for a screen the visitor has already earned by scrolling past the first impression.
